# Beyond Saving: How to Plan for the Retirement You Want

 by [**Stu Caplan**](https://www.memberswealthllc.com/insights/author/stu-caplan) on Oct 26, 2026

![Beyond-saving.jpg](https://www.memberswealthllc.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Beyond-saving.jpg.png?width=1260&height=709&name=Beyond-saving.jpg.png)

Most successful people spend decades focused on building wealth.

They work hard, save consistently, invest thoughtfully, and make financial decisions with the future in mind. For much of that time, retirement planning is about accumulation: growing assets, preparing for the future, and staying on track.

As wealth grows and financial independence comes into view, the questions become less about account balances and more about how people want to spend their time, support their families, and enjoy the life they've worked so hard to build.

The focus shifts from *"Am I saving enough?"* to *"What do I actually want my wealth to help me accomplish?"*

It's an exciting transition, but it can also feel surprisingly overwhelming. After spending decades focused on building wealth, deciding what to do with it isn't always as straightforward as people expect.

## How Do You Plan for Retirement Beyond Just Saving Money?

Here are three ways I encourage clients to approach this next chapter:

**Step 1: Start with your vision**

Two families can have nearly identical financial circumstances and completely different visions for the future.

One may dream of spending more time with children and grandchildren. Another may want to travel extensively, purchase a second home, support charitable causes, or help adult children get established financially.

And often, it's some combination of all of the above.

**Understanding those differences is one of the most important parts of what I do.**

When I first meet with a family, I spend a considerable amount of time asking questions. Not just about their investments, income, or retirement goals, but about their lives. What makes them happy? What keeps them up at night? What have they always wanted to do but haven't made time for? What responsibilities do they feel toward their children, parents, or other loved ones?

Sometimes the most revealing part of a conversation has very little to do with money.

I've found that people are often much better at telling me what they've accumulated than explaining what they ultimately want to accomplish with it. And that's understandable. They've spent their careers working toward financial security, but may not have spent nearly as much time defining what that security should allow them to do.

That's why we take the time to listen, ask follow-up questions, and occasionally challenge assumptions. It's not unusual for priorities to emerge during these conversations that weren't apparent at the outset.

The good news is that you don't need to have everything figured out before getting started.

Begin by identifying what matters most to you and your family. From there, you can evaluate costs, establish timelines, and develop a strategy that supports those priorities.

Some goals will be essential. Others will be nice to have. Understanding the difference helps guide financial decisions and creates flexibility as life unfolds.

**Step 2: Recognize that your path will evolve**

Retirement is rarely static, and neither are the goals that accompany it.

The early years may be filled with travel, hobbies, volunteer work, consulting opportunities, or more time with family. Later years may bring different priorities, including healthcare considerations, changing family responsibilities, or a desire for a simpler lifestyle.

I've also found that many successful professionals aren't necessarily looking to stop working altogether. They want to stop working on someone else's schedule.

Consulting, board service, mentoring, or part-time opportunities can provide a sense of purpose and engagement without the demands of a full-time career. They also discover new interests or ambitions they hadn't previously considered.

This is why I view financial planning as an ongoing conversation rather than a one-time exercise.

Our clients regularly revisit their goals as circumstances change. Sometimes it's because life throws them a curveball. Other times, it's because they've gained the confidence to pursue something they previously thought was out of reach.

**A good financial plan shouldn't lock you into a particular version of your future. It should give you the flexibility and confidence to adapt as that future takes shape.**

**Step 3: Make sure the pieces work together**

As wealth grows, financial decisions tend to become more interconnected.

Investment portfolios, tax strategies, estate plans, insurance coverage, retirement income, and family gifting decisions all influence one another. Addressing each independently can create missed opportunities or unintended consequences.

That's the thinking behind our **Wealth Done R.I.T.E.™** philosophy, which brings Risk, Investments, Tax, and Estate planning together into one coordinated strategy.

Consider some of the questions that frequently come up in conversations with clients:

- When can I comfortably retire, and what would retiring earlier actually look like?
- How much can I spend without worrying about running out of money?
- Can I help my children or grandchildren today without compromising my own financial security?
- How can I make more tax-efficient decisions about retirement income, charitable giving, or transferring wealth?
- Are my investments and estate plan aligned with what I'm ultimately trying to accomplish?

These aren't isolated financial questions. They're interconnected decisions that deserve to be evaluated in the context of someone's entire financial life.

The goal isn't simply to maximize investment returns or minimize taxes in any given year. It's to make thoughtful, coordinated decisions that support the life you want to live.

**Beyond retirement: What can your wealth make possible?**

For many families, the conversation eventually extends beyond their own retirement and lifestyle needs.

They begin thinking more seriously about the opportunities they can create for their children and grandchildren, the organizations they care about, and the legacy they want to leave.

One of the most interesting conversations I have with clients involves the timing of that support.

There can be a meaningful difference between leaving an inheritance decades from now and providing financial assistance when it might have the greatest impact. Helping a child purchase a first home, supporting a grandchild's education, or contributing to a cause that's personally meaningful can be incredibly rewarding.

Of course, these decisions need to be balanced against your own financial security and long-term needs.

But when families understand what they can comfortably afford, it often opens the door to possibilities they hadn't seriously considered.

And that's where I believe thoughtful financial planning can be especially valuable: **not simply helping people understand what they have, but helping them recognize what they can do with it.**

**The next chapter is yours to define**

Moving from accumulating wealth to enjoying and using it can require a significant mental adjustment.

After decades of saving, investing, and exercising financial discipline, giving yourself permission to spend, give, or pursue new experiences doesn't always come naturally.

But wealth is ultimately a tool, not the destination.

The purpose of planning is to help you use that tool intentionally, with a clear understanding of your options and the trade-offs involved.

You don't need to have every answer today. You just need to start asking the right questions.

**Ready to explore what's possible?**

At Members' Wealth, we take the time to understand what matters most to you and your family before recommending a course of action.

If you're approaching retirement, thinking about your family's legacy, or simply wondering what the next chapter could look like, we'd welcome the opportunity to have that conversation.
