# The Hidden Cost of a Disconnected Tax and Investment Strategy

 by [**Isaac Martin**](https://www.memberswealthllc.com/insights/author/isaac-martin) on Nov 02, 2026

How frequently is your tax bill larger than you expected once your accountant works through it all?

Perhaps investments were sold to rebalance your accounts, or to fund a major purchase. Maybe you received equity compensation but the withholding didn’t fully cover the tax liability. A mutual fund held in a taxable account can also distribute a taxable gain, even if you haven’t sold any shares! When investment decisions and tax planning happen separately, the cost can be easy to overlook: an avoidable tax expense, a missed opportunity, or less money available for the things that matter most to your family.

## Why Tax Planning Shouldn't Wait Until You File Your Return

By the time you meet with your accountant to prepare your return, many of the decisions affecting that year’s taxes have already been made. Consider someone who receives a sizable bonus and also sells appreciated securities to fund a home renovation. If the investment advisor does not know about the bonus, and the accountant learns about the sale the following spring during tax preparation, neither has the full picture when it matters most.

A proactive conversation can help evaluate which securities to sell, whether available losses could offset gains, and whether spreading sales across tax years makes sense. A coordinated discussion might also identify borrowing a portion of the renovation cost as an option worth evaluating, weighing interest costs and repayment risks against the tax impact of selling investments. The project may still happen on schedule, but with a clearer understanding of the total cost when taxes are factored in.

## Small decisions can have connected consequences

Coordination matters beyond major purchases. In a taxable account, selling an investment held for one year or less generally produces a short-term gain or loss; net short-term gains are taxed at ordinary income rates. That makes holding periods worth reviewing before a sale, alongside the investment’s risk and your need for cash. Similarly, selling an investment at a loss may help offset capital gains. But buying a substantially identical security within 30 days before or after the sale can trigger wash-sale rules and disallow the current loss deduction. Activity in another account, managed by someone else, can matter, too.

These are reminders that accounts should be viewed together. A sensible action in one account can affect the intended outcome in another.

## The lowest tax bill might not be the best outcome

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Don’t let the tax tail wag the dog”? “The dog” is your main goal. The gist is, consider taxes, but don’t decide solely based off the tax implications. Taxes are an important factor, not the only one. For example, holding an oversized stock position simply to avoid realizing a gain may leave you exposed to more risk than you can comfortably take. Sometimes paying tax is a reasonable tradeoff for diversification, liquidity, or progress towards a goal. The objective should be to understand the tradeoff before acting.

## Bringing Your Financial Professionals Together

Ask your investment advisor and tax professional: “What information do you need from each other before I make my next significant financial decision?”

Keep both professionals informed about changes in compensation, anticipated withdrawals, planned stock sales, and major purchases or sales throughout the year. Establish who will coordinate the conversation and when you should revisit your plan.

This connection between investments and taxes is part of the thinking behind [Wealth Done R.I.T.E.](https://www.memberswealthllc.com/how-we-help)A team approach adds value when information leads to coordinated decisions while options are still available to you.

Don't Let Disconnected Decisions Cost You

Your investment and tax decisions can have a lasting impact on your wealth. Understanding how they work together can help you identify overlooked opportunities, manage potential tax consequences, and make decisions that support what matters most to you.
